Optoelectronics Overview

khs-instruments provides a wide range of standard and OEM optoelectronic products.

Our standard products include line scan cameras, MPPC modules and 2D position detectors. If you cannot find a product that meets your requirements, please contact us. Many of our products are developed for customer-specific applications.

Unlike 2D cameras, line scan cameras use a single line of photosensitive elements (pixels). This allows a large number of pixels and, in many cases, larger pixel areas than comparable 2D image sensors.

Since only a single line has to be read out, high line rates can be achieved. Larger pixels can collect more electrons, which can provide higher sensitivity and lower noise, particularly in low-light applications.

Our line scan cameras are available with different sensor technologies, including CCD (Charge-Coupled Device), NMOS (N-type Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor), CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor) and InGaAs sensors.

InGaAs cameras are suitable for the near-infrared spectral range from approximately 800 nm to 1500 nm and beyond.

Standard CCD line scan cameras provide a cost-effective combination of readout speed and sensitivity.

For low-light applications, cameras with back-thinned CCD sensors are also available. The back-thinned sensor structure provides higher sensitivity than conventional front-illuminated CCD sensors and can achieve approximately twice the sensitivity, depending on wavelength and sensor type.

To reduce dark current, back-thinned CCD sensors are often cooled. Line scan cameras using the Hamamatsu S7031 and similar sensors are available. Please contact us for further information.

Spectrometer

Our low-cost spectrometers are based on our proven line scan camera technology, allowing us to reuse much of the existing hardware and software.

Since the signal-to-noise ratio of low-cost spectrometer heads does not always meet the requirements of demanding applications, we added a 32-bit signal processor for on-board signal averaging. This reduces noise while minimizing the processing load on the host computer, which is particularly important for multihead spectroscopy systems.

Wavelength calibration data is stored directly on the spectrometer board. In most applications, no external calibration files are required, and a spectrometer can be replaced without modifying the application software.

Line Scan Camera Software & Driver:

Most khs-instruments line scan cameras use a USB interface. Some camera models are also available with RS232 or SPI interfaces. Signed Windows 10 / 11 drivers for 32-bit and 64-bit systems are included.

All cameras are controlled and automatically configured through the same DLL. The DLL reads the configuration data directly from the camera, so in many applications only two function calls are required: reading the camera data and setting the exposure time.
